My Book Review of 'That's Not The Way It Works'

Hi, today, I'm reviewing That's Not The Way It Works: A No Nonsense Guide to The Craft and Business of Screenwriting by Bob Saenz, S-A-E-N-Z. Well, yes, this is a really, really good book that I highly recommend everybody who writes screenplays, getting started in the screenplay writing business read. Everybody should read this book because it will give you the real deal in terms of what screenwriting is like. And the number one takeaway I got from this is, don't waste a lot of your money.

There are many ways to waste your money in this field. Believe me, be careful how you spend and don't expect to be a genius straight out of the gate when it comes to this stuff. It takes time to develop as a screenwriter, and after that, you have to sell the screenplay to somebody unless you want to produce it yourself, in which case you have to learn to be a salesperson. In fact, so much of screenwriting is about making the sale, making the pitch, persuading others that what you have is worth the money that's going to go into making the thing. So that is some of the harsh realities of screenwriting. It's not a business to get into for overnight riches or glory, period. Okay, well, it's a great book. That's Not The Way It Works by Bob Saenz.

I highly recommend it for all writers, let alone screenwriters. But there's a lot about what he says in here that applies to novel writing too, for that matter. There are all sorts of mistaken impressions about writers in general. Maybe I'll do a series of videos about those.

Yeah, let's explode a few myths, shall we? Alrighty. We'll start with screenwriting as instant money. It's not. It's not, and a lot of the things you think you should do, don't. Okay. That's about it. I got a kind of a chuckle out of most of this because most of it is stuff that I would just go, oh my God, you got to be kidding me.

Yeah, people try very weird, desperate things. Don't do that. It makes you look bad. Okay, that's all I have to say. Have a nice day and I'll be seeing you. Take care!

Oh, no! Wrong one! :)

This one’s correct!

That’s more like it! :)

PS: You can get the ebook from this retailer.

You can also get it in print from my online bookstore and support indie bookstores.
